Today is the day Shikoku and Awaji Island were connected.
June 8 is "Onaruto Bridge Opening Day!
On this day in 1985, the Onaruto Bridge connecting Shikoku and Awaji Island across the Naruto Straits was opened to traffic!
When the bridge first opened, there was no end to the number of drivers who wanted to see the Naruto whirlpools from the bridge!
In 1987, it was selected as one of the "100 best roads in Japan" as a "distinctive road suitable for the beautiful scenery of the Naruto Straits and the Seto Inland Sea!
By way of comparison, the total number of vehicles using the bridge exceeded 200 million as of April 2019!
It has been 37 years since the opening, but the "Uzu no Oka Onaruto Memorial Museum" is still open for business today!
