Uzu no Oka Neon Street Tamaden" was introduced in Sankei Shimbun newspaper!

Awaji Island in Neon

At the Uzu no Oka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall (Fukura Hei, Minami-Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture), a sightseeing facility overlooking the Naruto Straits between Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, and Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, a wall of about 30 neon artworks called "Uzu no Oka Neon Street 'Tamaden'" has made its debut. The design of each neon artwork is based on a motif of Awaji Island's famous landmarks, foodstuffs, or culture, such as onions, a specialty of the island, and the Naruto whirlpools, with the person in charge of the artwork appealing to visitors to "learn about the charms of the island from a new angle.

The project was organized by the museum and Uzunokuni Minami-Awaji, the management company of "Michi-no-Eki Uzushio," a tourist facility near the Onaruto Bridge. This is the ninth in a series of efforts to promote the island's charms, including the "Onion Catcher" game, in which the prize for the crane-type game machine is an onion.

This time, the focus is on contemporary art. It took about a year from planning to production with the cooperation of "Zukaden (Takarazuka Electronic Club)," an electronics group active in music festivals, and illustrator AMISHIKI, who is also active overseas. The fact that Zukaden has members who hail from the island also contributed to the realization of the project.

The artwork was created by installing approximately 30 neon art pieces on a wall approximately 10 meters wide and 1.6 meters high. Each artwork features an image of a famous island landmark, culture, or foodstuff, such as hamo (Japanese eel), Awaji Island 3-year torafugu (blowfish), or the Naruto whirlpools, and colorful neon lights in green, blue, and pink add to the glamorous atmosphere.

A large neon onion artwork is placed in the center of the wall, and when visitors sit on the cushions in front of the artwork, the neon lights flash on and off.

The person in charge of the Awaji Island Tourism Promotion Committee hopes that the works featuring famous landmarks will "make people want to visit this part of Awaji Island.

The museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed on Tuesdays, but open every day after April.
