This is the ebb and flow of the tides (high and low tides). The sea surface rises from east to west, following the movement of the moon.

Difference in sea level height
When waves with high sea level come around Awaji Island, the movement of the waves becomes complicated because of the narrow pathways of water in the Akashi Straits and Naruto Straits. The timing of when the sea surface rises on the north and south sides of Awaji Island is different, creating a difference of up to 1.5 meters in sea surface height across the Naruto Straits.

Fast flowing water and sea bottom topography
Since water flows from higher to lower, water flows from the north, where the sea surface is higher at high tide, to the south, where the sea surface is lower at low tide, all at once through the Naruto Straits. At this time, because the Naruto Straits are narrow, the water flows very fast in the center of the straits where the sea bottom is deep and there are no obstacles. Conversely, the flow is slower near the shore, and the difference in speed causes a large whirlpool. This is the "whirlpool" of Naruto Strait.

Uzushio Science Museum
The science museum at the Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall on Uzu no Oka.
Visitors can learn how Uzushio is created, its actual size, and the speed of the water flow while playing, and there are also exhibits for adults to enjoy, including materials on Uzushio that explain the culture and climate of Minami-Awaji from various angles.

[Q]Why are there so many delicious vegetables, fruits, and seafood on Awaji Island?

[A] Both vegetables and fruits grow well because of the Seto Inland Sea's mild climate and long hours of sunlight, and seafood grows well because of the rich marine nutrition provided by the tides of the Akashi Straits and Naruto Straits.

Awajishima Onion
Even in winter, the warm climate and mineral elements of the island's soil make for sweet and tender onions.

Orange when it comes to...
Mandarin oranges are grown only on Awaji Island; the mild climate is also suitable for growing mandarin oranges.

wakame (species of edible brown seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida)
Nutritious wakame grown in the Naruto Straits

Red sea urchin
Sea urchins grow deliciously in the sea of Minami-Awaji, eating nutrient-rich seaweed.

Awajishima Milk
Delicious milk squeezed from cows raised in a rich natural environment

・Eggs
Eggs from chickens living on a poultry farm that takes advantage of the island's climate and nature

Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall
A complex facility built on a hill overlooking Onaruto Bridge and the Naruto Straits.
